Start testing & report all results
Once you have verified that you have a CLIA Certificate of Waiver (or a higher-level CLIA license), have complied with all additional state registration or other requirements, and have trained your staff appropriately, you are ready to start testing patients.
Proper sample preparation is essential for accurate results. Take precautions to ensure that the sample-collection area is not contaminated by environmental sources of lead. You can review the CDC's streaming video, Collecting and Handling Blood Lead Samples, by clicking here. The CDC offers a number of other tools and training materials related to lead. Click here to access them.
Keep the LeadCare II Quick Reference Guide and product insert easily available to staff in the testing area. Ensure device operators are familiar with requirements for routine quality control (new lot, new shipment, new operator), your state's guidelines for re-testing, follow-up, case management, and reporting and your own facilities' procedure manual for lead testing.
You must report blood-lead results to the appropriate local, state, or federal agency. Contact your state Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program for the specific follow-up, case-management and reporting guidelines that apply to your patients. Click on the left side of this page to find the program in your area.
